According to reports, the South African government said on the 23rd that it has received a notice from China to lift the ban on wool imports from South Africa.
South Africa produces approximately R5 billion worth of wool per year, affecting the livelihoods of 35,000 workers and 4,500 seasonal shearers and wool handlers; exports are worth R1 billion, of which about 70% is exported to China. Wool is South Africa's fifth largest agricultural export after oranges, grapes, wine and apples.
Didiza, Minister of Agriculture, Agrarian Reform and Rural Development, said he welcomed the announcement by the General Administration of Customs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China to lift the ban on imports of wool and other cloven-hoofed fur products from South Africa.
Patel, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, said that engagement with China has been carried out in a positive way, and the coordinated efforts of different parts of the South African government have greatly helped.
The National Wool Association (NWGA) of South Africa said the lifting of the ban is good news for everyone in the wool industry value chain.
