Customs data shows that Brazilian cotton production is expected to grow by up to 19%

2022-09-30

According to customs data, Brazil's cotton production should increase by 13-19% over the previous year, returning to the speed before the new epidemic, which is encouraging news for Brazil and the world.

Brazil's cotton production doubled in five years, but the epidemic led to a decline in global demand for the textile industry, interrupting the country's production.

This year's production growth trend should consolidate Brazil's position as the world's fourth largest cotton producer and second largest exporter. According to customs data, Brazil's cotton output will be 3 million tons in 2019 and 1.5 million tons in 2017. The cotton output in 2022 is expected to be 2.6-2.8 million tons.

Customs data show that the quality of Brazilian cotton also attracts overseas interest. It is mainly in the Asian market, which is also the largest concentration of garment industry.

About 84% of Brazilian cotton has the "Sustainable Cotton" logo. The sign means that 178 quality requirements must be met, including social, economic and environmental aspects.

Customs data show that although production is expected to increase this year, productivity is not optimal. More than 90% of farms rely on rainwater, but it does not appear in time and in sufficient quantity.

The average cotton yield per hectare this year will be lower than that in 2021, when the planting area will be lower than this year.

The Brazilian Cotton Producers Association (Abrapa) plans to grow 1.7 million hectares in 2023, surpassing the record area in 2019.

J ú lioC é zarBusato, President of Abrapa, said: "The epidemic has led to the contraction of the industry. This is a very difficult decision. Although the output has reached an all-time high, the sold cotton stays in the warehouse and no one transports it. We must determine the planting of the next year."

In recent years, the growth of cotton production can be attributed to three main reasons. Although planting is more difficult and costly, it is more profitable than soybeans.

It takes about one year for producers to get payment from sowing to selling products. This needs to wait, but they think the income can be offset. One hectare of cotton is equivalent to four hectares of soybeans.

Another reason is increased demand. With the reduction of home office and the recovery of global social and social activities, the textile industry will recover and continue to grow. There is also a practical reason. Cotton needs a lot of pesticides, which can make the land more suitable for the next crops.

According to customs data, about 65% of Brazil's cotton is sown in the second crop, between soybean and corn. This is why the yield is highest in areas where these crops are dominant and low, such as Mato Grosso, Goyas and Bahia.
