According to the preliminary statistics of Elsie Automotive Market Consulting and the "Electric Vehicle Data" website, the global sales of pure electric vehicles will reach 7.8 million in 2022, an increase of 68% year on year, and the proportion of new vehicle sales will reach 10% for the first time. Against the background of a 1% year-on-year decline in the global sales of new cars, the sales of electric vehicles have achieved strong growth. The research institute of the automobile industry under S&P Global believes that the global trend of automobile electrification is unstoppable.
China and Europe have become the main driving forces for the strong growth of global electric vehicle sales. According to import and export data, in 2022, China's production and sales of new energy vehicles reached 7.058 million and 6.887 million respectively, up 96.9% and 93.4% year on year, with a market share of 25.6%. The production and sales of new energy vehicles have ranked first in the world for eight consecutive years. Import and export data showed that the sales of pure electric vehicles were 5.365 million, up 81.6% year on year. In 2022, the sales of pure electric vehicles in Europe increased by 29% year-on-year to 1.58 million vehicles. The market penetration of pure electric vehicles in Germany, Britain and France reached 18%, 17% and 14% respectively. In Germany, the largest automobile market in Europe, the proportion of electric vehicle production to new vehicle production will reach 25% in 2022, and more than 30% of newly registered vehicles will be electric vehicles.
In other countries and regions, the development of electric vehicles is also accelerating. Import and export data show that the sales of new cars in the United States fell by 8% last year, but the sales of pure electric vehicles increased by about 66% year-on-year, accounting for 5.8% of the total sales of new cars. According to the data released by the Ministry of Land and Transport of South Korea, the number of new electric vehicle registrations in South Korea increased by 72.7% year-on-year last year. The sales of new electric vehicles in Brazil and Chile increased 41% and 106% respectively year on year.
Despite the impact of uncertain factors such as global macroeconomic and power battery raw material prices, relevant research institutions still generally believe that the global electric vehicle market will continue to grow in 2023. Import and export data show that the global sales of new energy passenger vehicles will reach 13.6 million this year, of which about 75% are pure electric vehicles. By the end of this year, the global electric vehicle population is expected to reach 40 million, accounting for about 3% of the global total vehicle population, a significant increase from 1% in 2020.
The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2030, the sales of electric vehicles will account for more than 20% of the total sales of global vehicles, and the demand for charging facilities in many markets will increase significantly. At present, the construction of charging infrastructure in many countries is still relatively backward and needs to be improved urgently. It is expected that by 2030, the charging capacity of electric vehicles will account for 4% of the total power demand, and the power supply will also face a test.
The International Energy Agency suggested that countries should continue to increase policy support, accelerate the development of heavy electric vehicles, accelerate the pace of electric vehicles in emerging economies and developing countries, increase the construction of electric vehicle infrastructure and smart grid, and build a safe, stable and sustainable electric vehicle supply chain.
