In the first quarter, the number of Vietnam's imports from China surged six times year-on-year

2021-05-28

Statistics from the General Administration of Customs of Vietnam show that in the first quarter of this year, Vietnam imported 3,945 fully assembled (CBU) vehicles from China, six times the number of the same period last year. Imported brands include Beijing, Brilliance and BAIC.

According to the report, despite the significant increase in the number of cars imported from China, China is only Vietnam’s third-largest auto supplier, after Thailand and Indonesia. Vietnam imported approximately 35,300 CBU cars in the first quarter, a year-on-year increase of 31.1%.

Of the fully assembled (CBU) cars imported by Vietnam in the first quarter, 80% came from Thailand and Indonesia. The number of cars imported from Thailand was 19,300, a year-on-year increase of 56%, while the number of cars imported from Indonesia was 8,950, a year-on-year decrease of 26%.

Since the entry into force of the ASEAN Commodity Trade Agreement (ATIGA) in 2018, Thailand and Indonesia have been the leaders of Vietnam's auto suppliers due to zero import tariffs. A 47-70% import tariff is imposed on cars imported from China.
