Kazakhstan plans to vigorously develop electric vehicles

2021-08-03

The Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, Mirzagalyev, said when attending a government meeting that motor vehicles are the main source of air pollution in Kazakhstan, and this must be taken seriously. The aging of vehicles is one of the main causes of pollution. There are 3.9 million registered motor vehicles in Kazakhstan, of which 2.5 million have a service life of more than 10 years, accounting for 64%. At the end of 2020, Kazakhstan passed the "Technical Regulation Law" to strengthen the monitoring of fuel quality at gas stations, and it must meet the K4 and K5 emission standards.

Mi suggested that the Ministry of Trade and Integration maintain monitoring of fuel quality at gas stations; suggested that the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development strengthen the responsibilities of vehicle inspection offices and vehicle owners; and that local governments continue to carry out the elimination and renewal of old motor vehicles. In order to solve the problem of air pollution caused by transportation, it is planned to vigorously develop electric vehicles. Starting from June 2020, a zero tax rate will be applied to the scrapping of electric vehicles. In order to establish supporting infrastructure, a pilot project of electric vehicle charging stations has been launched by the Vehicle Scrap Tax Operation Company (ROP). At present, 50 charging stations have been put into operation in Nur-Sultan and 52 charging stations have been put into operation in Almaty. In 2021, it is planned to build 46 charging stations in some cities and along intercity highways with a total length of more than 3,000 kilometers.
