The rear of the car chassis is usually where the rear car diffuser is located. It works by speeding up the airflow under the car. The pressure under the car is affected by the car diffuser, so as the car moves through the air, the diffuser can expand back to the surroundings in the diffuser. It uses Bernoulli’s principle so that pressure decreases with increasing speed. Since the pressure under the car is lower than the pressure on the sides and above the car, if implemented correctly, downforce will be created. A car diffuser “drives” the underbody, creating downforce. Front car diffusers also exist (especially on Le Mans prototypes or similar cars); however, they generate downforce entirely by exchanging momentum with the air, since they have nothing in front of them to drive. A poorly designed front car diffuser can cause an area of low pressure towards the front of the car, which slows down the air behind it and reduces the efficiency of the rest of the body. The front diffuser usually pulls air away from the car so that it doesn’t affect the rest of the body. Air can be exhausted through a channel or near the front wheels.
